“Does Western Therapy Work on Eastern Minds?” — Dr. Christine Chang

Inspired by a character from the Netflix show “Beef” (2023) who claims, “Western therapy doesn't work on Eastern minds, ” this session explores how Western therapeutic practices can be integrated within Eastern cultural contexts in a nonbinary way. This Courageous Conversation session examines the fundamental mechanisms of change in clinical work, as well as cultural and intergenerational trauma that impact our communities. By focusing on the micro levels of the therapeutic process, this session encourages a deep dialogue on adapting therapeutic methods to address concerns related to Asian bodies, relationships, and minds, fostering resilience and promoting mental wellness in Asian communities.

Integrating Psychodynamic Approaches with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy— Working with Cognitive Distortions through Contemporary Psychodynamic Therapy and Cultural Sensitivity
Registration: http://tinyurl.com/5n734jdt

In this workshop, I will discuss how to work with common cognitive distortions (e.g., all-or-none thinking, should statements, etc.) using the core concepts and techniques of contemporary psychodynamic theories with cultural consideration. Specifically, I will describe theoretical understandings of cognitive distortions from the lens of contemporary psychodynamic therapy. I will provide various methods to work with clients after identifying their cognitive distortions, other than classic cognitive restructuring. This workshop is particularly suitable for clinicians who are trained as generalists and/or who work with clients using overintellectualization as a coping mechanism. The workshop will help clinicians: (1) Deepen the understanding of cognitive distortions from the perspective of contemporary psychodynamic therapy;,(2) Identify techniques that emphasize bodily sensation and emotional awareness when working with cognitive distortions, and (3) Increase the awareness of cultural beliefs and collective trauma when working with clients struggling with cognitive distortions.

Our 3rd Asian/Asian American Webinar Series “Owning Our Power II - Decolonizing Ourselves” —

The Power of Joy

In Asian/Asian-American cultures, joy can often be perceived as an emotion that needs to be suppressed, accessed only when we have truly earned it (and will we ever get there?), or named by others. Cultural and racial messages within the US also shape how Asians and Asian-Americans are not allowed to experience joy. Joy however can be transformative and bring vitality to our lives. In this interactive webinar, we will a) recognize the power of joy, b) identify mindsets that block this emotion, c) reclaim narratives that give us access to this powerful emotion, and d) identify ways to build and protect joyful experiences unconditionally and unapologetically.

Please register on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/383500649767 Space is limited. This webinar will be recorded.

Our 2nd Asian/Asian American Webinar Series “Owning Our Power II - Decolonizing Ourselves” —

Listening to Our Bodies

Because of various pressures and cultural norms, we may have learned to tune out from our body, view it as a tool, criticize it or shame it. For Asian/Asian American individuals, this experience can be further complicated by racism, war, scarcity, and messages about our bodies belonging to the collective. In this webinar, we will be encouraging us to notice the social and cultural scripts we tell ourselves that make us disconnect from our bodies. We will also name ways to help connect with and recognize how our bodies can be sources of data, power, and joy in our everyday life.

Our 2nd Asian/Asian American Webinar Series “Owning Our Power II - Decolonizing Ourselves” —

Scarcity, Abundance, and Asianness

The scarcity mindset is a fear-based survival tool. It may have helped us go through capitalism, colonization, authoritarianism, war, and poverty. It also costs us and traps us in anxiety and never-enoughness. In the webinar, we will discuss (1) the intersections between scarcity mindset and experience growing up as an Asian/Asian American and (2) concrete ways to let go of scarcity mindset and nurture the beginning of abundance.

Topic: Navigating Prejudice and Internalized Prejudice (watch the recording here!)

Part of how we own our power is to cultivate ways of thinking and being that protect us. Our experiences of being discriminated against and oppressed affect our overall well-being and sense of agency. Our speakers will provide examples of how subtle and obvious forms of prejudice impacted their sense of self. Our speakers will also emphasize the importance of differentiating unhelpful collective messages such as colorism and “gender inequality is cultural” from cultural identity, so we can restore wellness and justice in our minds, homes, and communities.

Our speakers will discuss helpful ways to cultivate mutually beneficial social networks and invest in mentoring relationships.
